State Sen Shirley Huntley (D-Jamaica) will be out campaigning next week, but she will be doing it in a wheelchair. The lawmaker recently took a nasty spill at her home and injured both ankles.
“I’m a survivor,” she told the Chronicle on Thursday, as she was resting at home with her foot elevated, as per her doctor’s orders. “It might slow me down, but I’ll get there.”
Huntley said she was on her way to a meeting and walking down a flight of stairs in her home, when the ball of her left foot got caught on something, perhaps the carpet, but she’s not sure. Sensing she was about to fall she tried to prevent injury by shifting her weight onto her right ankle.
She ended up spraining her right ankle and fracturing her left. She has a cumbersome boot on the latter and is not sure how long her recovery will take. “This damn boot is the worst part, especially during the summer when it’s hot,” she said.
