A convicted child sex offender is facing up to seven years in prison after pleading guilty last week to sharing files of child sex abuse through his computer.

Eduardo Medina, 35, of 196th Street in Hollis, pleaded guilty to promoting a sexual performance by a child and a violation of a state law that requires him, as a registered Level 3 sex offender, to notify the state of his internet identifiers, according to a statement issued Wednesday by the office of Queens District Attorney Richard Brown.

Medina is scheduled to be sentenced to 3 1/2 to 7 years when he appears before Acting Queens Supreme Court Justice Barry Kron on July 18.

Brown said the sentence is more than warranted.

“In pleading guilty, the defendant has admitted to sharing, through his computer, disturbing videos of young children being sexually abused,” Brown said. “It is important for the public to remember that these are, for all intents and purposes, crime scene videos as they depict real children being cruelly victimized both physically and emotionally and who will have to carry the painful memory ... for the rest of their lives.”

Brown said police executed a search warrant at Medina’s apartment on Aug. 28 of last year. They seized his laptop, cell phone and electronic storage devices.

A forensic scan of the items conducted by law enforcement turned up 14 videos of children believed to between the ages of 6 and 12.

Brown said the types of networks examined in this case allow users to connect to each other directly in order to allow them to exchange files.

Each user within the network can access the files of another member if a given user has chosen to share on the network.

The district attorney said Medina was a registered Level 3 sex offender based on his 2001 conviction in Manhattan for acts involving a child under 11 years old, for which he was sentenced to 10 years in prison.
