Kyle O’Quinn of Jamaica, pictured, led 15th-seeded Norfolk State University in Virginia to a stunning upset over second-ranked Missouri last week in the opening round of the NCAA Division I Men’s basketball championship tournament, scoring 26 points and grabbing 14 rebounds.
But the clock struck midnight for O’Quinn’s Spartans, 26-10, on Sunday in a 84-50 loss to Florida.
O’Quinn, a 6-10 senior who attended Campus Magnet School in Cambria Heights, scored four points in the Florida game.
Teammate Marcos Tamares, a senior forward from Bayside, led all Norfolk State players in the Florida game with 12 points and tied for the lead with five rebounds. He also scored 11 in the upset over Missouri.
Junior forward A.J. Rogers, from Rosedale, scored seven points vs. Florida, while sophomore guard-forward Kievyn Lila-St. Rose from Corona scored two points.
O’Quinn finishes his career at Norfolk St. with more than 1,600 points. He was the Mid-East Athletic Conference defensive player of the year last year.
