Four years after Sharida Matthew’s daughter, Sabrina, was murdered, the distraught mom can hardly speak about it without being reduced to tears. And on Friday, the anniversary of the crime, she held a candlelight vigil as she does every year and pleaded for justice.
“I am going to continue this until they catch the killer,” Matthews said Tuesday. “I’m going to continue doing it until the day I die. I know if I was the one who had been killed, Sabrina would do this for me. I love her and I miss her.”
Sabrina, 14, was found dead in her bedroom at around 12:30 p.m. on Nov. 9, 2008 with her throat slashed.
About 40 people gathered outside the Matthews’ Cambria Heights home Friday to pray, sing Christian songs and remember the vibrant young girl taken from them too soon. Matthews said she was disappointed that members of the Police Department and elected officials did not attend, even though they were invited.
Anyone with information about the killing is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 1 (800) 577-TIPS (8477).The public can also submit tips by logging onto nypdcrimestoppers.com, or by texting 274637 (CRIMES), then entering TIP577. All tips are strictly confidential.
