Members of the Laurelton and Springfield Gardens Lions clubs recently donated $500 to the Queens Library Foundation to go toward the purchase of new books and other materials for the Laurelton Library.

Springfield Gardens President Gloria Garraway and Laurelton Club President Rayboyd Stennett gave the donation to Peter Wayne of the Queens Library Foundation.

The donation comes at a time when the City Council is in budget negotiations with Mayor Bloomberg’s office in an effort to avert a proposed $29 million cut in the city’s support for the Queens Library system in the fiscal year that begins on July 1.

Club members also are regular volunteers at the library, assisting students with homework assignments; conducting “Reading for Fun,” a program for children through grade 6,;and coordinating a Teen Advisory Board for area youths ranging in age from 12 to 18.

Welcome to the discussion.
