Community Board 13 will host a public hearing tonight, June 5, to discuss and vote on an application by Verizon to construct a 58-foot tall cellular tower at 229-17 to 229-27 Merrick Blvd. in Laurelton.

The meeting will be at 6 p.m. at the Chi Eta Phi Sorority building, which is located at 219-03 Merrick Blvd.

Numerous local officials have protested the application, including Councilman Donovan Richards (D-Laurelton).

Richards said it is out of place in a residential community, and that residents have concerns about both the obtrusive nature of a structure nearly 60 feet tall, as well as possible long-term health effects that have been debated since the technology first was introduced.

“We cannot afford to sit on the sidelines while decisions that impact our community are made without us,” Richards said in a statement issued by his office. “The 60-foot tower is simply wrong for this neighborhood. I am proud to stand with my friends and neighbors as we make it clear that we must be included in the conversation when major decisions about our community are being made.”

Welcome to the discussion.
