A 48-year-old Jamaica man was shot and killed early Tuesday morning near his home on 173rd Street.
Police said Mohamed Hamwi was found by officers responding to a 911 call at about 12:15 a.m. at the corner of 173rd Street and 105th Avenue. He had been shot once in the head and once in the torso in what may have been a botched robbery attempt.
Speaking Tuesday evening before a meeting of the 103rd Precinct Community Council, Inspector Charles McEvoy, the precinct’s commanding officer, said Hamwi was a man of steady habits who generally came home from work at the same time by the same train and walked a regular route. He said detectives believe two people were involved. It was the first shooting in the precinct in seven weeks.
Anyone with information on the shooting or the identity of the suspects is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 1 (800) 577-TIPS (8477). The public also can submit tips by logging onto nypdcrimestoppers.com or by texting 274637 (CRIMES), then entering TIP577. All tips are strictly confidential.
