Pinkies up! Fancy females, many dressed in stylish outfits with matching hats and lace gloves, brought their finest porcelain cups and kettles to a high tea event on Thursday at the Robert Ross Johnson Family Life Center in St. Albans. Some 50 older adults, most of them women, danced, played games, feasted on tiny sandwiches and, of course, drank tea — of which there were many varieties on hand.
The gathering, cosponsored by City Councilman Leroy Comrie (D-St. Albans) and Healthfirst, was a chance to socialize, have fun and eat good food — all for free. “I am happy to see so many seniors here, dressed up, dancing, and having fun while staying vibrant,” Comrie said.
The lawmaker’s kindness was not lost on the attendees, many of whom said they appreciated the chance to add a touch of elegance to their afternoon. “It sounded like a lot of fun,” said Eve Henderson of Queens Village, who was wearing a glittery top hat and was one of the first people out on the dance floor. “I’m all about having fun, and we seniors have a saying — if it’s free, it’s for me.”
For Laura Brown of Rosedale, who said she attends tea events often with the women’s clubs she has joined, it was just another opportunity to sip one of her favorite beverages and enjoy good conversation with her fellow community members.
“When you get older, it’s good to get out as often as you can,” said Ada Williams, 82, of Jamaica. “I took the bus here all by myself.”
Music was provided by 2-4-1 Entertainment with Christine Gibbons acting as DJ and Robin Vance on saxophone.
