A dance instructor who worked in an afterschool program at a St. Albans charter school was arrested Thursday on charges stemming from an alleged sexual relationship with a 13-year-old female student.

Tyshaunna Roberts, 22, who was employed by the Sports & Arts in School Foundation, has been charged with second-degree sexual abuse and endangering the welfare of a child, according to a statement by the office of Special Commissioner of Investigation Richard Condon.

Roberts taught at Pathways College Preparatory School within the IS 192 building.

Condon’s office said the investigation began when the mother of another female student reported seemingly inappropriate Facebook messages exchanged between Roberts and her daughter.

The mother indicted to investigators that Roberts’ alleged Facebook contact with the student victim “implied an inappropriate relationship.” The SCI statement said the Sports & Arts in Schools Foundation fired Roberts after the complaint was lodged.

Calls to the foundation and to the office of Pathways Principal Kim Mitchell were not returned.

Welcome to the discussion.
