Last weekend’s snowstorm snarled transit and traffic, caused lines for groceries, gasoline and flashlight batteries, and cost taxpayers a small fortune in weekend overtime for snowplow drivers before disappearing in Monday’s heavy rain.

But in between, the snow covered every green space in the borough, converting them into a paradise for children, and allowing some grownups to become children again, if only for a few fleeting hours.

Hundreds turned out at Juniper Valley park in Middle Village with sleds, toboggans, inner tubes and offroad vehicles for exercise, fresh air and fun before the rains — and the work week — came on full force on Monday.

And for those tired of winter, Monday also brought an annual sign of spring in Queens.

The pitchers and catchers reported to Mets spring training camp in Port St. Lucie, Fla. Opening Day at Citi Field is April 1 — 45 days and counting.
