The historical plot that was home to a Wendy’s fast-food restaurant for decades which has since closed, appears to have a new project may be in the works for the lot on Queens Boulevard.

According to the Department of Buildings website, an application was submitted in March by Chang Hwa Tan on behalf of Tan Architect PC in Elmhurst to demolish the building and turn it into a seven story mixed-use structure.

The applicant did not respond to requests for comment.

The DOB denied the request. Reportedly, there were a number of issues with the proposal, the specifics of which are not readily available.

A denial does not necessarily guarantee that a project will not happen since a few days ago, a plywood fence was put around the building and neighboring lot.

Any proposal can be re-submitted and approved by the DOB if the developer has corrected all issues or violations from the original application.

As of yet, there have been no updated or new applications filed with the DOB.

The Wendy’s lot, located at 85-07 Queens Blvd. in Elmhurst was most famously turned into a McDowells, the fictitious fast-food chain portrayed in Eddie Murphy’s classic movie “Coming to America” in 1988 but the history of this land goes back much further.

According to the Landmarks Preservation Committee, beneath the site, there is evidence of a freshwater stream that would have provided water to humans and the game they hunted hundreds of years ago.

Archeologists read through maps and plans and determined Horse Brook to be the name of the stream. Based on surveys and newspaper clippings, major alterations to the area were made in the 1800s.

Either way, the exact fate of the Wendy’s is unclear but the plot officially merged with a neighboring lot at 51-35 Reeder St. just before the fence went up.
