Even the most spirited attempts by police and elected officials to ensure pedestrian safety aren’t always enough to prevent tragedy from striking.
A 67-year-old man was hit and killed by a tractor trailer as he walked through the parking lot of Key Food at 105-35 64 Road in Forest Hills last Wednesday morning.
According to police, the truck, which was in the process of delivering items to the store, was backing up when it struck Elliot Mintzer, of Forest Hills, with the passenger side rear tires around 9 a.m.
According to published reports, witnesses tried to aid Mintzer after he was struck, but he showed no signs of life.
When police arrived shortly after the accident, Mintzer was unconscious, unresponsive and suffering from severe trauma to his body.
He was pronounced dead at the scene.
The driver of the tractor trailer remained on the scene and was not charged with any wrongdoing.
The investigation into the accident is ongoing.
