The City Department of Environmental Protection and Department of Design and Construction announced it will move forward with a $25 million infrastructure project to improve storm draining and sewer flow in Maspeth.
The project, which is expected to begin this spring, will include the installation of larger sewer lines at important drainage points.
Two 96-inch circular sewer lines current serve 69th Street between Queens Boulevard and Calamus Avenue, and Calamus Avenue between 69th and 74th streets. This upgrade will add a five-foot by eight-foot barrel sewer line to that existing capacity.
The existing sewers located under Calamus Avenue and 69th Street serve as major conduits in the area’s drainage network and both will receive significant capacity upgrades to ensure the proper drainage of storm water from the streets and to help eliminate sewer backups.
The section of Maspeth where the work will take place is known for suffering from flooding and backups during heavy rain. The hilly terrain there causes storm runoff to flow down 69th Street northward toward Calamus Avenue, overwhelming the sewer infrastructure there.
In addition, 8- and 12-inch distribution water mains will be replaced with new ductile iron mains within the confines of the sewer work. The City says the new water mains will improve the pressure and quality of the water while also providing a critical redundancy to the distribution system aimed to help minimize disruption to consumers during future maintenance work.
“This $25 million investment will add significant capacity to the sewer system, help to better manage the storm water that drains to this low-lying neighborhood and reduce flooding,” DEP Commissioner Emily Lloyd said in a press release.
The project is being funded by the DEP and the construction will be managed by the DDC.
Contractors will establish a field office in the community and begin mobilizing for the project early next month.
It is slated to be completed in the fall of 2016.
