Police and fire officials are investigating an explosion that
killed a Richmond Hill resident on Monday morning.
Fire officials said they were summoned to 112-20 111 Ave. along
with EMS personnel at 9:28 a.m. Police said they found a white male
approximately 50 years of age who was pronounced dead at the
scene.
The dead man was not identified publicly as of 3 p.m.
Fire marshals and members of the NYPD's Emergency Services unit
still were gathering evidence at the scene on Monday afternoon.
Neighbor William Foley said he was putting out his garbage at
the time.
“I heard a noise, but I ignored it at first,” he said. “I
thought it might be some cans being blown over. And you often hear
a lot of fireworks around here.”
Police said fireworks may have been involved, though both NYPD
and FDNY officials said the investigation remains open.
