UPDATE

The gunshots heard on Capitol Hill this afternoon were fired by police, who killed a woman who had driven into a security barrier at the White House and drove off, the Washington Post reports. Officers shot her near the Capitol building, with the gunfire audible to some inside.

. . .

Gunshots were heard at the U.S. Capitol Thursday, Rep. Grace Meng (D-Flushing) said in a Twitter message she posted at 2:27 p.m.

The Capitol was put on lockdown in response, Meng said. The shots apparently were fired outside the building, home to the House of Representatives and Senate.

The first-term congresswoman also posted a photo taken from inside the Capitol that shows what appears to be a police officer armed with a rifle taking a combat position at the top of the steps to the building.

National media outlets began reporting on the incident shortly after Meng posted her tweet.

ABC News reported that a police officer was injured in the incident, but did not elaborate. It said the Capitol Police had directed people on the Hill to "shelter in place."

Other reports say the gunfire was the continuation of some type of incident that began at the White House.
