Gay rights activist Jeanne Manford will be posthumously awarded the 2012 Presidential Citizens Medal by President Obama at a White House ceremony on Friday, Feb. 15.

Manford, a Flushing resident for 40 years, passed away on Jan. 8. She was 92.

When Manford stepped into the 1972 New York City gay pride march as the proud mother of a gay son, she started a worldwide movement. Never before had a parent openly expressed support for a gay child.

Her activism over the last 40 years and her founding of Parents, Families & Friends of Lesbians and Gays changed the way that parents and their LGBT children relate, Councilman Danny Dromm (D-Jackson Heights) said.

Dromm started the foundation with Manford in 1993.
