New York Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter and New York Mets second baseman Daniel Murphy weren’t the only representatives from New York City at the Major League Baseball All-Star Game at Target Field in Minneapolis on Tuesday.

William Termine, a gym teacher at PS/IS 87 in Middle Village, was honored as one of the 30 winners of the “All-Star Teachers” program, aimed at celebrating successful educators around the country.

Termine, the Yankees’ representative as voted on by fans, took part in a pre-game ceremony on the field Tuesday, where each teacher donned his or her team’s jersey and FOX Sports announcer Joe Buck talked of the importance of teachers like Termine to the sold-out crowd.

Grammy Award-winning singer Idina Menzel concluded the ceremony by covering Minnesota native Bob Dylan’s “Forever Young” on a stage just behind Termine and the other 29 teachers.

A lifelong Yankees fan, Termine has taught at the school since 2000, in addition to coaching his daughter’s youth soccer and softball teams.

Welcome to the discussion.
