A minor brushfire started this afternoon at the Home Depot parking lot off of Woodhaven Boulevard near 73rd Avenue in Glendale.
A call came in at 5:18 p.m. from the manager of the Home Depot.
The fire spread along the bushes of the parking lot near the entrance. Bystanders said that the fire literally jumped as assisted by the winds. The flames reached the height of the Home Depot sign out front.
It burned for 20 minutes and took 30 to put out.
No one saw the fire start, but Battalion Cheif Robert McBride of the 46th Battalion said that it was the perfect weather condition for a brushfire.
"It could have been started by a cigarette butt on the fresh mulch," McBride said. "With these little pockets of winds it could've been anything, really."
About 30 firefighters from the four trucks on the scene said they had trouble putting it out at first since the nearest fire hydrant was surrounded by flames. They had to bring a hose to the next closest hydrant, by the corner of Five Guys restaurant.
"I came out to see what happened and the bushes were already lit up," said a bystander who preferred to not give his name. "I did see the people parked nearby jump in their cars and take off."
No one was injured, and the cause is unknown.
Firefighters doused the closest plants in the garden center of the Home Depot to ensure that more flames did not spark.
