A paraprofessional at PS 9 in Maspeth was arrested and charged with rape last Thursday after allegedly engaging in a sexual relationship with a student.
A teacher’s assistant at the Walter Reed School at 58-74 57 St. for the last 10 years, Woodside resident Clara Somodi, 39, was charged with second-degree rape, second-degree criminal sexual act and endangering the welfare of a child after the 14-year-old male victim told a school employee on Wednesday that Somodi was his girlfriend.
Somodi, who reportedly earns around $35,000 per year, has been suspended without pay and the student is being provided with counseling.
Department of Education spokesman David Pena called the allegations “disturbing” in a statement issued on Monday.
“We immediately suspended her when we found out about the arrest. If the allegations are true, it would be extremely disturbing,” the statement read. “We have zero tolerance for any kind of sexual behavior among our educators and students.”
According to the criminal complaint, the relationship began in early December and continued until last Tuesday, when the student skipped school and met with Somodi.
According to multiple reports, the teacher and the victim engaged in oral sex and sexual intercourse throughout the day at the student’s house while his parents were not home.
Reports also said that Somodi and the student had sex at least 10 times over the course of their four-month long consensual relationship.
Somodi was being held on $10,000 bond at press time and is due back in court on April 14.
The Maspeth school enrolls 662 children and serves kindergarten through ninth grade.
