Shoppers and visitors at Queens Center mall got an early start on the holidays last week at its 8th annual tree lighting ceremony.

Audience participation was actively encouraged among the hundreds of children of all ages in attendance.

The festivities were replete with holiday music and songs, dancing, activities and refreshments.

Even Santa Claus took time out from his busy holiday schedule at the North Pole to drop by and visit with the children.

Early arrivals received magic wands that they waved during the countdown, and then used to help light the giant tree.

The magic moment came at 6 p.m., with the tree coming alive with thousands of lights and decorations.
