The victim, whose name had not been released by press time, was struck by a car that went onto the sidewalk in front of a UPS Store on Queens Boulevard and then smashed through the windows of the store.

Police officials said the suspect, 64-year-old William Gallagher, drove off and was arrested by officers a block away from the scene of the crime after they were contacted at 8:43 a.m.

One of the victim’s feet was severed, as he was buried under piles of shattered glass and brick for several minutes. He was rushed to Jamaica Hospital Medical Center and listed in stable condition. No other injuries were reported.

The UPS Store was closed and empty at the time of the incident.

Eyewitnesses told police officials that it looked like Gallagher was trying to park his car and accidently hit the gas pedal instead of the brake.

As of Tuesday afternoon, he was in police custody and awaiting a court hearing.
