The Department of Transportation Division of Bridges will fully close the Grand Street Bridge over Newtown Creek for the next four Saturday mornings in order to perform maintenance and structural repairs.
The bridge that connects Brooklyn to Maspeth will be closed April 13, April 20, April 27 and May 4 from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. To accommodate the construction, vehicular and pedestrian traffic will be detoured to the Metropolitan Avenue Bridge.
Variable message signboards will be placed on each side of the bridge seven days in advance of the work to notify the public.
The DOT reports that the roadway plates on the Grand Street Bridge are scheduled to be replaced, a task that requires full closure of the structure for the saftey of the crew performing the work.
A DOT spokesman said that the bridge closure should not create too many traffic problems.
“As with all bridge work, DOT attempts to schedule repairs during relatively low-traffic hours and will direct drivers to alternative routes,” the spokesman said.
