The Cinderella story the Forest Hills High School boys basketball team was hoping to become will not have a storybook ending.
In a closer game than many people expected, the 22nd-ranked Rangers fell to Brooklyn’s sixth-ranked Grand Street Campus High School 74-71 last Wednesday in the round-of-16 in the Public School Athletic League’s “A” division city basketball tournament.
Forest Hills went 10-4 in the regular season and upset 11th-ranked Eleanor Roosevelt High School of Manhattan 72-61 on Feb. 27 before losing to Grand Street.
Preston Cheung, Forest Hills’ leading scorer during the regular season, dropped 13 points in the loss while both Elijah Cokely and Christophe Garcia scored 16 points.
Garcia also grabbed a tremendous game-high 19 rebounds, adding another dominant performance to what was a very impressive season for the junior.
Cokely recorded a double-double of his own with 11 rebounds.
