Melinda Katz scored an upset in the race for the Democratic nomination for borough president on Monday, picking up the endorsement of the Uniformed Firefighters Association.

Councilman Peter Vallone Jr. (D-Astoria), who serves as the Council’s public safety chairman, had been considered a possibility for the union’s support.

“The people of Queens need a borough president who understands public safety and there is no doubt that Melinda Katz is the right candidate for the job,” Steve Cassidy, president of the union, said in a statement issued on Monday.

“Keeping our families safer comes before anything else in our city does,” Katz said. “That’s why I’ve spent my career fighting for laws that protect Queens families, and honor the sacrifices made by our city’s uniformed firefighters.”

Vallone spokesman Andrew Moesel pointed out that Vallone has more public safety union endorsements than Katz.

“He doesn’t need to create the illusion of experience protecting Queens residents — his is real,” Moesel said.
