The Diabetes Prevention and Control Alliance is supporting the YMCA in its efforts to make the YMCA’s Diabetes Prevention Program available at no cost to Medicare Part A or B beneficiaries

As part of that program, a diabetes screening event will be held on June 20 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Ridgewood YMCA located at 69-02 64th St.

YMCA-USA selected 17 communities to participate in the event as part of the “Seniors Tell Diabetes Not Me” week that runs from June 17 to 22. The DPCA is co-sponsoring the event.

The project, funded by the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services Innovation, marks the first time this program being provided at no cost for qualifying seniors through Medicare

DPCA and Y staff will be on site to evaluate seniors’ risk of developing type 2 diabetes and educate them on the YMCA’s Diabetes Prevention Program and enroll qualifying participants.

More than 25 percent of people over the age of 65 have diabetes, and another 79 million have prediabetes, the precursor to type 2 diabetes.
