Danna Santana of East Elmhurst opened her child care center, the Danna Family Group Daycare, in June 2006 and in February 2013, she became the first child care provider in Queens to receive accreditation from the National Association of Family Child Care.

The NAFCC sponsors the only nationally recognized accreditation program designed specifically for family child care providers. It is recognized as the highest indicator that a family child care program is a quality environment.

The list requirements for NAFCC accreditation include being in compliance with the New York State Licensing Agency and maintaining a current first aid and pediatric CPR certification.

“NAFCC accreditation measures the quality levels of multiple aspects of family child care from health and safety practices to family engagement to the appropriate curriculum and educational components,” Lehilany Labarca, the executive director of the Child Care Network of New York said. “Danna Santana’s achievement demonstrates a combination of years of experience, proper specialized training and total commitment to her profession.”

Santana, with the help of two assistants and one substitute, runs the child care center from her home at 23-14 92 St. and cares for 16 children, whose ages range from six weeks to 12 years of age.

“What I like most about running a child care center is working with the kids,” Santana said. “I get to watch and help these children grow and learn every day.”

Satana says a typical day at her daycare consists of three nutritious meals, indoor and outdoor activities, fire drills, nap time, arts and crafts, music time, dancing and story time.

When asked how she felt about receiving the accreditation, she said she was honored but received a lot of support.

“I would like to thank my agency, Child Care Network, for encouraging me to apply for NAFCC and supporting me through the whole process; my family; and all of the parents of my kids for believing in me,” she said.

NAFCC Accreditation establishes that a Daycare home follows the highest levels of quality child care in the United States. In a time when Daycare Centers are thought to offer the highest quality standards, family childcare providers like Danna Santana demonstrate that Family Childcare IS quality care.

I want to share that there are only 20 Family Daycare homes in the State of New York that have NAFCC national accreditation and only one provider in NYC: Danna Santana!
