The Rego Park-Forest Hills Lions Club hosted its 15th annual festival and barbeque at Forestdale on July 20.
Forestdale youth enjoyed a bouncy house, ring toss, spin-art, cotton candy and popcorn machines thanks to Lions Club President Sher Sparano and her group of volunteers.
Even with the blistering heat, the event was hailed a success as many children and their families came to participate in activities throughout the day such as relay races, tug of war and a water-balloon toss.
“The Lions Club Festival is an event that both Forestdale families and staff look forward to every year,” said Rosemarie Ewing-James, the associate executive director of Forestdale. “We are so appreciative of our partnership with the Lions Club and the joy they bring to our youth on this special day.”
Forestdale Inc. is a family services agency that works with children and families who need help.
Located at 67-35 112 St. in Forest Hills, the voluntary agency provides foster care, preventive and other family services in New York City including health-care and education for more than 500 children, counseling and advocacy for families, and access to case managers.
In addition, Forestdale sponsors the Fathering Initiative, a program for fathers who wish to take an active role in their child’s lives. Forestdale provides these men with parenting classes, links to education and job resources.
“Our mission is to ensure that youth have the fundamental assets they need to grow into independent and engaged adults, specifically a safe and loving home, education a and career opportunity, and health literacy,” a statement sent out by Forestdale said. “With a history of service dating to 1854, Forestdale serves over 1,000 families from Astoria to Far Rockaway every year.”
The Lions Club also works to meet the needs of the local community. Worldwide, there are 1.35 million members who perform community service in 207 countries every year.
Both the Lions Club and Forestdale said they plan on holding the festival next year and look forward to working with one another. For more information on Forestdale visit forestdaleinc.org.
