On Aug. 17, community leader and City Council candidate Andrea Veras brought Briarwood residents, including Lakita Foy, center, and Victor Lopez, right, together to help clean up the neighborhood.

Volunteers and supporters of Veras’ campaign swept sidewalks, cut grass and bagged garbage on Main Street between Manton Street and 84th Road, a strip of land the Democratic candidate says has been neglected by the city.

Volunteers also painted over a dirty and weather-worn retainer wall that the candidate, a founder of the Briarwood Task Force, says has not been painted since it was constructed in 1955.
