A computer teacher at PS 174 in Rego Park with a confirmed case of touching children inappropriately at another school is out on bail after being arrested on Thursday for allegedly touching two male students.
The NYPD and Queens District Attorney Richard Brown said Wilbert Cortez, 49, of Rego Park, was charged with two counts of second-degree course of sexual conduct against a child and and two counts of endangering the welfare of a child.
The new incidents allegedly took place in September 2010 and June 2011, and involved boys who are now 9 and 8.
Schools Chancellor Dennis Walcott met with parents at the school for nearly two hours on Friday morning. He said the current principal had no knowledge of the past allegations against Cortez.
The first incident took place in 2000 and Walcott said investigators at the time determined the claim to be substantiated.
Walcott said his office has begun a review of all personnel files to determine if there are other current employees who have substantiated cases of sexual contact or inappropriate contact with students.
He said those cases will be flagged and that from this point forward he will move to dismiss any employee for whom there is a substantiated charge.
