Community Board 5 announced in a Dec. 10 press release that it has formed a special committee to review Samaritan Village’s proposal for a homeless shelter at 78-16 Cooper Ave. in Glendale.

The Briarwood-based human services agency is seeking to transform a former factory on the site into a 125-family homeless shelter, and the Department of Homeless Services sent a letter to the Mayor’s Office in December in support of the plan. CB 5 opposes it.

The special committee will consist of members of the board’s Executive Committee and its chairmen and women of Housing Services, Health and Human Services, Education, Zoning and Land Use, Environmental Services, Public Safety, Special Economic Development, Public Transportation and Transportation Services committees.

The release says the panel will “analyze the Samaritan Village proposal for this site based on the suitability of the site, cost effectiveness of the proposal, its effect on transportation and public transit services, public safety and local health care services.”
